When Australian interiors and furniture designer Sarah Ellison turns on her camera for her Lucky 13 interview, she’s inadvertently giving me travel style inspiration. She’s Zooming from a hotel room in a white T-shirt stamped with Jil Sander’s graphic logo and a pair of aviator reading glasses. It’s simple, yet pulled together—and, as she tells me, a window to her general design sensibility. “If there’s any brand that explains my interior style,” she says, “it’s Jil Sander. I love something that’s dramatic, but with a simplicity to it. It’s very much a sculptural minimalism, and that’s how I design interiors as well.” Sculptural shapes and tonality are just two pillars of Ellison’s interior and personal style. What turns a simple room into a space, she explains, are the details you absorb with every sense. Rooms you want to stay in need to have a beautiful candle burning, a carefully selected soundtrack, and materials you can’t hep but touch—it’s all about the ambiance. “Essentially, I love a space that really fits into that aesthetic where it’s minimal, but there’s a sensory element to everything.” Her taste is now arriving in homes through 70s-chic furniture she’s created for Design Within Reach, including her latest creation, a deep “Float’ sofa in "Piccolo" brown shade custom-made by Pantone for the piece. Ellison gets into the power of her statement sofa, and the other minimalist items she’s loving now, ahead.

"This spray is just beautiful, and in a gorgeous ceramic bottle. I'm just inspired by it on a design level. If I were to have guests, I'd use it in my spaces, to go to that level of sensory experience. It's this beautiful, spicy, almost a little bit Christmas-y smell—it's very fresh. And candles can be a little annoying, where at the end they can get smoky, but a spray is always fresh. I have this styled in my office on a shelf with a little vase."

"Huggy was designed in 2020, so it’s been out for a couple of years. It came out at a time when we were going into Covid and everyone needed a hug, so it was perfect to add to a room. People have resonated with this design more than any other design that I’ve done, and I think it’s because of that really round and nurturing shape that it’s so appealing. It just adds a lovely soft, round feeling to a space."

"I love this brand. In Australia, as an everyday dresser when you're kind of feeling casual, it's such a nice option. It's resort wear at the end of the day and we pretty much live in resort wear. It's great over your swimmers if you're at the beach but you can also button it up. I've worn it over a blazer to be more smart."

"I love serving champagne in a coupe. They look a little '70s or '80s, and a lot of my stuff is inspired by the '70s and '80s. At a dinner party, I would do a simple, beautiful table: white tablecloth, I'd probably forage some leaves from the garden for the table, and [I'd use] some really nice ceramics for the plates. There's something about the experience of drinking out of a really nice glass and what it does to your hand that I like."

"I got this bag probably six months ago. Number one, it's super useful. Just the shape and the size—I have a son, so I'm always carrying extra things in [for him].

I love the woven texture of it. I think sometimes when you're dressing really simply, a bag with a little bit of texture is important. That simple logo makes it look cool."

"I always love a spicy, herby scent. It's almost like a cat to catnip—I just love it. It's a natural reaction to a scent. And I love that the oil is in this little glass tube that you can throw into your bag and roll on your wrist."

"I live right by the beach, so a really beautiful towel is almost part of my wardrobe. I just love the tones in this one. As far as towels go it's kind of a fashion-y towel."

"I've got lots of big, gold, sculptural earrings. I like the idea that they're matching but not exactly the same. They have more detail than I normally have in my jewelry, but if you wore something really plain and simple like a white dress they would look fabulous."

"I have this on my bedside table. It's been around for a really long time, but it's so contemporary and so cool. It's so coastal with the beautiful shell shape. And it's wrapped in rattan, which has that '70s nostalgia to it. Essentially it's almost like a giant piece of jewelry. When you design a space, the last thing you do is bring in the jewelry to accessorize. It has so much character in it."

"I don't own these shoes—I would like to own these shoes. They're comfortable, but you can go from office to going out. I'm really into a square toe at the moment as well. I have another pair of Bottega kitten heels with the same [toe], and it's just really flattering. They're minimal and simple, and dynamic as well."

"I love the idea of creating things where you don’t need a lot [extra]—just amazing [furniture] where the shape and the size are dramatic enough in and of themselves. That’s all you need. So this sofa doesn’t need cushions or anything like that. It really is a statement piece that stands on its own two feet. It comes in a modular or a sectional, so you can build it out to be a beautiful conversation piece.

The first time we tried it I was like, oh my god, this is so comfortable. The shape of it forces you to lay back and with the arm on the side. It’s a very ergonomic sofa to sit in."

"This is a Byron Bay brand. The Australian sun is very intense and you need to wear sunscreen every single time you leave the house. This one is reef safe and it has really strong coverage. To be honest, I just love the packaging! I do make decisions based on packaging all the time."

"I love the color! And I love a one-step jumper that has a sculptural sleeve to it. I saw it came with a matching skirt and they look so good together."
