This pottery vase by Vally Wieselthier has the typical colorful Wiener Werkstatte decoration. It was made in Austria around 1925.

Artists often create works in many different media-ceramics, paintings, sculptures, jewelry and even metal products. After the First World War, many artists went to different countries and schools to learn new "looks" and techniques. Britain, France, Germany and Scandinavia are leading art centers.

Vally Wieselthier (1895-1945) was famous in Germany in the 1920s, but hardly known in the United States. She was born in Austria, studied under Michael Powolny from 1914 to 1920, and then continued to work with artists in the new Vienna factory. She is a leading ceramic artist and designer, making figurines, female heads, vases, etc.

Immigrated to the United States in 1929 and worked in New York, making large ceramic statues, and designing tableware for the Sebring factory in Ohio; stone tableware design for Mayer Pottery in Trenton, New Jersey; and working in Cowan Pottery, Ohio, where she introduced Wiener Werkstatte style. She also designed glassware, jewelry, textiles, pulp mannequins, furniture, and even metal elevator doors.

With her success and fame, few works appeared in American auctions. Neal Auction Company sold an 8-inch tall Wiener Werkstatte vase for US$1,037. The vase was made in 1925, with Wiener Werkstatte and VW signatures on it, respectively.

Fifty years ago, my aunt gave me a perfume lamp. This is a humanoid dog sitting and begging. It has perforations on the head, a place for perfume on the back of the head, and large glass eyes that can let out light. Can you tell me something about the perfume lamp?

French pharmacist Maurice Berger invented the perfume lamp in 1897 when he added perfume to lamp oil or other liquid fuels. Electric perfume lamps that use bulbs to heat perfume were manufactured in the early 1900s. The fragrance comes out through the small holes in the lamp.

Perfume lamps have been made into many different graphic shapes and manufactured by manufacturers in several different countries. Lamps with bulbs but no perfume in them are usually used as night lights. Today, battery-powered or plug-in products, diffusers or sprayers can be used to provide a pleasant smell to the room.
