You may not recognize the name CG Ceramics, but it is likely that you have already enjoyed your morning latte in one of its speckled cups, or CG tableware in your favorite downtown restaurant. Behind the scenes, it is Christie Goodfellow who carefully crafts the eye-catching stoneware, who is the owner and sole potter behind the brand. "I think it's really special to be able to create works that can be used as canvases that other people are creating," she said. "And I really like making objects that people will use in their daily lives."

During Goodfellow's BFA study at the Art Institute of Chicago, his love for clay flourished. She went to study photography and graphic design, but described how she often took a peek at the ceramics class while wandering in the hall. She finally succumbed to her curiosity and signed up for the course. "Looking at the computer doesn't suit me," Goodfellow explained. "I quickly realized how much I like the tactile process of ceramics and the making of objects. I just fell in love with it."

After graduating from university, Goodfellow continued her ceramic education by taking classes and experimenting with different clays and glazes in the local clay studio. This is where she honed her unique style-organic shapes and subtle glazes highlight the natural colors of the clay. "My interest lies in materials and construction of minimal forms," Goodfellow said. "I like to let clay speak for itself. Sometimes, the lines or curves of the work I'm making will provoke a reaction in my heart-then I know I'm on the right path."

In 2013, Goodfellow converted her 200-square-foot backyard shed into a temporary studio and worked full-time in ceramics. Today, she operates in larger studio spaces, not only in Cincinnati, but also serving restaurants, bakeries and retail stores nationwide. You will find her work locally in MiCA, Khora and Fern-just to name a few. If you are looking for a place to do holiday shopping, CG Ceramics will host an annual holiday fair in Goodfellow's old backyard studio in early December. The fair will showcase Goodfellow's work and other local artists' work.
