Designing a wedding is a lot like designing a house. Your ultimate goal is to make the decoration reflect your identity as a couple, while incorporating meaningful souvenirs, favorite colors and eye-catching trends. 

However, venturing beyond traditional whites and pastels to incorporate bolder and bolder styles can be a daunting task. Playful items like peacock feathers, mermaid prints, or moss may sound exciting in theory, but if not executed properly, they can look tacky.

To enhance your wedding day aesthetics in a less daunting way, we spoke with Anthony Gianacakos and Beetle from New York designers at Anthony George Home and Nicki Clendening from Scout Designs. The colorful, unconventional and avant-garde design of this bold duo reveals the top five wedding decoration ideas they should definitely steal from interior designers (including themselves!) to plan your dream day.

Hand-painted objects are not only unique and personalized artworks that you can display at home, they can also add cute colors to wedding decorations. "Everyone likes the beauty of details, especially at weddings," Gianacakos said. "What better way to incorporate special things than hand-painted unique objects? This is also a souvenir that guests can take home after the event."

Although name tags and menus are the more obvious choices, brides and grooms can use painted rocks as paperweights, napkin holders, tea lights, and even flower pots for small plants to become more creative. Customization, whether at home or in a place, can make anyone feel important, especially when trying to personalize objects with names or dates.

"Some weddings also have experiential events. Why not ask an outstanding artist to make watercolor portraits for your guests on site? This will instantly add color to your decorations and become a souvenir for them to hang in their homes," Gianacakos suggested . "The goal of many designers is to avoid ideas passed down from generation to generation. Like any innovative living space, think outside the box!"

One person's trash is another person's treasure, especially when sifted through a bustling flea market. However, for those who can’t make up their minds about wedding decorations, the flea market is actually a great place to buy vintage decorations that are not only beautiful and unique, but also full of history (or “borrowed” if you can ). 

"Buying anything in bulk at a flea market can be a challenge, but with a little planning, you are more likely to collect the items you need," Clendening said. "One of the things I have been looking for and use often is florals. This is a great way to decorate your reception, they don't need to match."

Other flea market finds include silverware, glassware, plates and bowls. "These are items you can always find, and they won't break the bank," she shared. "You will never have enough to eat, because they will come in handy during the holidays and future entertainment."

If there is no flea market in your area, or if you feel overwhelmed at the thought of shopping from rows of mini treasures, Clendening also recommends that you visit the thrift store in more depth. You can still purchase smaller decorations, such as napkin rings and crystals (which guests can actually take home after the event), while still capturing the wonderful timeless and retro decoration on your big day.

"Balance is important," Janakos quickly pointed out. "But why is there a boring desktop that your guests will never remember?"

As a mundane and anticipated alternative, he suggested using smaller items such as napkins or chargers to "crazy mode" and combining "pure pop music" with chairs, tablecloths and even glasses provided by bars.

"I encourage my clients to embrace color every day and do the same at weddings," he said. "For design, everything is about surprising and unexpected things. The bride and groom can easily achieve this goal while maintaining some traditional elements. If you edit yourself or intervene with a fair eye, you can achieve it elegantly. Bold." 

An easy way is to keep the fabrics of the wedding party clothing neutral, so that they don't conflict with more over-decoration.

"I have to admit that I am not a big believer in trends," Clendening said. "Your wedding day should be a day when you will look back and feel that you still love everything about that day."

To commemorate these emotions in physical form, the bride and groom may want to give up renting furniture altogether (if they can) and invest in furniture that they can actually keep after the party.

"Of course, it depends on the type and scale of the wedding you are hosting. But for smaller, more intimate weddings, candle holders and stands are a great way to decorate the table, and you can use them at home," Clendening said He added that tablecloths, placemats, vases and plates are other usable items that can be reused and cherished for many years.

"Your wedding reflects your style and taste, so it makes sense to use the items you choose for important days as items you want to use again at home," she shared.

Everyone wants flowers to receive attention like dresses or cakes, but Gianacakos likes to flip the script by using more exotic plants as the core. Like many of the above items, eye-catching green plants can also be taken home after the wedding as a vivid and breathing reminder of your special day. 

"For example, potted orange trees can bring eye-catching pop colors, especially if planted in beautifully decorated flower pots," he said. "Like a home, you want these works to be the beginning of conversation. I can also see a Mazari palm tree to increase the drama of scale, height, and memorable details." 

Another type of plant design fashion, especially in this post-pandemic world, is to buy cheap and easy-to-care cacti and succulents. "These beauties have many interesting shapes, textures, colors, and even flowers," Gianacakos said. "I just hope your guests are smart enough not to touch some of them."
